People for a Healthy Bay is a political action committee dedicated to a thorough cleanup of mercury and other toxic contaminants at the former Georgia Pacific mill site and the Whatcom Waterway. Cleanup decisions are not based just on science alone. The Department of Ecology follows the desires of the landowner, the Port, but what the local government wants makes a difference. The Healthy Bay Initiative requires our City Council to put away their rubber stamps and become active advocates for a higher standard of cleanup. The Initiative establishes the principle that the citizens of Bellingham desire our downtown waterfront to be permanently cleaned to the highest environmental standard possible and we expect our public officials to do everything possible to ensure this happens. Our community deserves nothing less.
